Timba Bass Lesson 15: Percussive Effects Part I

Now that we’ve covered much of the fundamentals of Clave aligned Timba Basslines, it is now time to look further into some of the subtleties of the style. In this video, I explain the percussive effects often used in Timba bass playing and demonstrate them by revisiting the Clave Neutral Tumbaos covered in the first lesson of the video series. This video should be relatively intuitive for most bass players already familiar with “dead notes” or “ghost notes” on the bass. However for those who are not, I recommend Scott Divine’s videos addressing the technique in a more conventional context.

As always, this blog entry is not meant to be a complete tutorial, just a brief demonstration of a general concept. If any of these terms are unfamiliar to you, be sure to check out my books, The John Benitez Method Vol 1 and Vol 2. I also highly recommend any of Kevin Moore’s Beyond Salsa Bass Series.
