Timba Bass Lesson 10: 3-2 Tumbaos Example 3

Example 3 abandons the three-note “hook” from the first two 3-2 tumbaos and instead focuses on the '“on beat/offbeat” concept that is so distinctive of Timba basslines. In this case, the “on-beats” are beat 4 in measure 1, beat 3 in measure 2 and the quarter notes in measure 4. Likewise, the off-beats are the '“and” 4 leading into the 3-side as well as the “and” of beats 1 and 2 within the 3-side (measures 1 and 3).

As always, this blog entry is not meant to be a complete tutorial, just a brief demonstration of a general concept. If any of these terms are unfamiliar to you, be sure to check out my books, The John Benitez Method Vol 1 and Vol 2. I also highly recommend any of Kevin Moore’s Beyond Salsa Bass Series.
